Wilcoxon Releases Premier Digital Triaxial Accelerometer and Temperature Sensor

April 9, 2025Frederick, MD – Wilcoxon Sensing Technologies, an Amphenol company and a pioneer in industrial vibration monitoring, has released the 883M digital triaxial accelerometer and temperature sensor. Wilcoxon’s first digital accelerometer with dynamic vibration output operates on the Modbus protocol, which is compatible with PLCs, DCSs, SCADAs, and HMI displays. The digital data supports condition monitoring, process monitoring, IoT edge processing, and data science activities.

Digital output from the 883M includes three orthogonal axes of waveform and spectrum over the frequency range 2 Hz – 5 kHz for detailed vibration analysis, fault diagnostics, and condition-based maintenance. Fifteen calculated vibration metrics for each axis can be used for trending and process monitoring. The sensor also outputs the temperature of the monitoring point. The query-response mechanism of Modbus RTU communication protocol allows users to acquire only the data that is relevant to their goals and operations.

The sensor’s vibration metrics are calculated overall values for trending and process monitoring. Twelve metrics are based on specific frequency bands for acceleration, velocity, and displacement based on RMS and peak calculation methods. Overall values are also provided for true peak, crest factor, and standard deviation. All calculated vibration metrics are available in three axes.

According to Tom LaRocque, Wilcoxon’s Director of Product Management, “The 883M offers exceptional flexibility in process monitoring by providing 52 metrics that cover acceleration, velocity, and displacement across three axes, in addition to temperature measurements.” While data scientists may be interested in tracking all available metrics, he explained, “Most users typically focus on a smaller subset of this data. To simplify monitoring and alarming, three of the frequency bands align with ISO guidelines 10816-3 and 20816-3 for assessing machinery vibration. Additional metrics can be selected based on the specific failure modes relevant to the application.”

The 883M has an acceleration range of ±16 g peak, a resolution of 0.488 mg, and a ± 3 dB frequency range of 2 Hz – 5 kHz. Modbus RTU protocol communicates via an RS-485 serial bus for stable data transmission. With an IP67 rating and an operating temperature range of -20° to +70°C, it is suitable for most factory environments. Options for mounting the sensor to machinery include adhesive mounting and an included stud mount. Screw mounting kits and magnet mounting kits are available for precision triaxial alignment. Compatible cable assembly are also available from Wilcoxon.
